The Magician of Tiger Castle by Louis Sachar. Sachar is best known for his novel Holes, but he has a whole slew of children's novels. This is his first adult novel.
Review:
This is the traditional story. Boy meets girl, wizard intervenes, lots of stuff happens, and then there is an ending which, of course, focuses on the wizard. This is a fun romp and while Sachar manages to spill all kinds of interesting facts across the pages, none of it gets in the way of the story and Sachar manages to create some myths of his own. This book will not challenge most people, does not grab hold of too many stereotypes, and offers a new way of looking at magic without removing all of the luster. A sequel is quite possible, but seems unlikely to me and I kind of like that for this novel.
