The Bones Beneath My Skin, TJ Klune

The Bones Beneath My Skin by TJ Klune with a bit of trepidation I step into "spine tingling" as I'm not particular a horror fan, but I am a TJ Klune fan, so...

Review:

This book was not horror.  I did enjoy this book, but cannot really say anything about it without giving something away.  I have to admit, as odd as it sounds, that this book was very normalizing in the midst of almost constant unreality.

Review:

This is mostly a fun book encouraging acceptance and finding joy in the individual.  I like it!  It was interesting that all the children came from male-female families, but all the adults are in same sex relationships.  Tiny nit in a huge, wonderful story.

Review:

Some of the ideas that Klune addresses are truly novel.  This take on ghosts is really wonderful and I enjoyed the new ideas that are brought out.  The look at the nature of death--as the ending of one step in a journey and the beginning of another is comforting.  Frankly, such an approach is part of why so many religions do what they do.  This take on change and finding one's self is really quite good and well explained.  The book is good and I enjoyed it.

Review:

In some ways this is the island of the misfit toys set to fantasy.  It is a story of inclusion.  It is not yet, if it ever will be, "classic fantasy."  In a sense it is a coming of age story for the protagonist who really doesn't seem to live until the after the story begins.  It is also a story of bigotry and the fight for acceptance.  It is also a story of orphanages.  In modern fantasy novels it seems in vogue for the protagonists to be gay and this book does not disappoint.  It feels to me like the poem, "I am a piece of paper" was written before the book.  Whether it was or not, the poem stands on its own.
