Review:
The subtitle is presented, but civilization is never really defined. It seems that at each stage where one might define civilization, there is an argument to be made that controlling energy lead to that point (with the possible exception of the computer age). The book starts in prehistory and ends in current times calling for us all to give up the extreme control of energy and arguing (perversely) that this will not reduce civilization. It is a good walk through the ages with good arguments identifying how energy was crucial to each step described.
